Prof Kofi Busia is the Pro Vice Chancellor of Pentecost University, Ghana, and a distinguished
Chartered Chemist, Medical Herbalist (Phytotherapist), and an academic with over 30 years of
professional experience in teaching, research, policy, and multidisciplinary health systems
strengthening. As a trailblazer in the field of ethnomedicine, he pioneered the establishment of the
world’s first Doctor of Herbal Medicine degree programme at Pentecost University.
He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Herbal Medicine (Elsevier), Associate Professor in
Ethnomedicine and Phytotherapy at Pentecost University, Adjunct Professor at the University of
Medical Sciences, Ondo State, Nigeria, and Eminent Visiting Scientist at Saveetha Institute of
Medical and Technical Sciences, India.
Prof Busia previously served as Director of Healthcare Services, Acting Director of Planning and
Health Information, and Programme Officer for Traditional Medicine at the West African Health
Organisation (WAHO), where he led major regional health projects funded by USAID, WHO, Johns
Hopkins University, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He was instrumental in producing
Volumes I and II of the West African Herbal Pharmacopoeia and led WAHO’s efforts in adolescent
health, COVID-19 response, and leadership capacity development.
Prof Busia’s academic journey spans some of the UK’s top universities. He holds a PhD in Organic
Chemistry and a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from Birkbeck, University of London, a BSc (Hons) in
Herbal Medicine from Middlesex University, and trained in medical science at Queen Mary,
University of London. He has lectured at leading institutions including Birkbeck, Middlesex
University, University of Ghana, University of East London, Lincoln University College, Malaysia and
the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State, Nigeria.
A widely published scholar and author, his works include Organic Chemistry for Schools, Advanced
Level and Senior High School Physical and Inorganic Chemistry, and the two-volume Fundamentals
of Herbal Medicine. He contributed to CRC Press’s African Indigenous Medical Knowledge and
Human Health and edited the 2nd Edition of the Ghana Herbal Pharmacopoeia.
Prof Busia continues to speak at international fora and lead technical workshops on traditional
medicine, public health leadership, and medicinal plant research. In 2013, he was honoured as
Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Burkina Faso (Knight of the National Order of Burkina Faso). He
remains an active advocate for integrating traditional medicine into modern healthcare through
science, education, and policy.
